Christmas jazz

On Saturday, December 12 between 15:00 and 17:00 there will be an extra good Christmas atmosphere in Hoven Restaurant. Anders, Lars, Asle and Truls will be serving up Norwegian and American Christmas tunes, and there will be both swing and Christmas songs, folk music and blues, but most importantly there will be Christmas spirit.

Those who will be playing at Hoven are four students from the third year of the Bachelor of Music program at Volda University College. The band consists of Asle Hansen (drums), Anders Viktor Kvile (piano), Lars Grindvik Uri (bass) and Truls Henrik Frøysaker (guitar).

As a band, they're fairly new, and haven't had a proper band together. But since they're in the same class, they know each other well and talk to each other both vocally and instrumentally.

Anders Viktor Kvile from Breim boasts piano, organ, trumpet and accordion in his instrumental armory. In his 30 years, Anders has played a lot in different places, and now works as an organist in Stryn. Jazz is very close to Anders' heart, and it shows in his playing when he throws in juicy chords and playful melodies.

Asle Hansen is a 23-year-old drummer from Bergen. Asle has a background in African percussion, which he has transferred to the drum kit. He believes that drumsticks should be like an extension of the arm, something he is trying hard to achieve without having to get a prosthesis. Asle has a great love for jazz and funk, and generally anything else that "grooves".

Truls Henrik Frøysaker is 22 years old and comes from Valdres. From an early age, Truls picked up the guitar and quickly developed into a satisfying and skilled guitarist. This wasn't enough for Truls, and he quickly realized that singing was one of his strengths, and has taught himself to become a raw guitarist and vocalist. Truls is playful and smiling, and it's hard not to fall in love with the guy when he starts playing and singing.

Lars Grindvik Uri is 29 years old and comes from Skodje. Bass has been a big part of Lars's life, and you would almost think that the bass grows with him. What started as 4 strings has now developed into 7. Lars is the bassist in the Dream Theatre Tribute band, and is a very skilled bassist who has a lot of experience from the stage.

"The opportunity to play on Hoven in December came as an early Christmas present to us. Anders called late one night to share the news with us. This was an opportunity that was impossible to turn down. We put our heads together and put together a varied repertoire of both well-known Norwegian Christmas songs and classic American Christmas songs."
