ABOUT THE DISTILLERY

Mortlach was the name of the original village established around a monastery founded by Saint Moluag in the 8th century. With the construction of Dufftown in 1817, the old name of the village was discontinued, except for the distillery.

The distillery was the first to be licensed in Dufftown and was founded by James Findlater, Donald Mackintosh and Alex Gordon in 1823. It soon passed into the hands of the Grant brothers who "knocked down" the buildings and used the equipment in their distillery in Rothes.

It was George Cowie and his son Alexander who started whisky production in the 1850s and steered Mortlach to a prominent position as a malt blend.

Although no one is sure where the unique distillation regime originated, Mortlach's weight and position as one of the distilleries with a strong belief in the older methods of making whisky shows this.

Mortlach was in Cowie's hands until 1923 when it became part of John Walker & Sons and from there via DCL into Diageo.

In 2014, it was announced that a "mirror image" of the existing distillery would be built which, when completed, will double the total capacity.

MIKAEL LUNDÈN

With Mortlach's long history as a backdrop, host Mikael Lundèn will have a full presentation of the whisky series we'll be sampling, with some traditional Norwegian food with a twist. Mikael Lundèn has almost 40 years of experience with whisky, and as a member of "The keepers of the Quaich" and Senior Brand Ambassador for Diageo, his knowledge and passion will make this a fantastic evening in the mountains.
