When the Vikings took Hoven

It's not every day. Hoven is visited by real Vikings from Shetland. This week around 30 participants from the world-famous Up Helly Aa tradition took the Loen Skylift to the top of Hoven and created a sight that most of the guests had hardly expected.

Dressed in handmade costumes, with shields, helmets and axes, they filled the mountaintop with Viking songs, stories and laughter. Many of the visitors stopped to watch, take pictures and have a chat with the Vikings, who were happy to show off to both young and old.

The visit created a lively atmosphere at the summit that day. Norwegian and international guests were able to experience an encounter with a cultural tradition that still stands strong in Shetland, and many took the opportunity to get up close to the impressive costumes and equipment.

One of the highlights of the day was when the Vikings recorded a humorous segment for our social media. The video has already received millions of views and has brought Loen Skylift attention far beyond Norway.

The visit also highlighted the historical ties between Shetland and Western Norway. Up Helly Aa is Shetland's largest cultural festival and an annual celebration of Norse heritage. The festival is known for its torchlight processions, processions and the distinctive Jarl Squad, and attracts thousands of participants and spectators each year.

For us, it was extra nice that these cultural bearers chose to make the trip to Hoven The visit gave both guests and staff a day a little out of the ordinary, and we hope this won't be the last time the Shetland Vikings visit.

Thank you for a memorable day!
